  Fix the erroneous modification of shadows

(Almost) each shadow was modified - when reading - by repeatedly setting
the "exists" flag to "true". This is now fixed, but better than
previously in 51980259cf5c4cfc61e3330a4c398da18b188767.

This should fix failing tests.
