  Fix the erroneous modification of shadows

(Almost) each shadow was modified - when reading - by repeatedly setting
the "exists" flag to "true". This is now fixed, but better than
previously in 8aa481592c437ffb8d2f6e05ba9330e499718ba4.

This should fix failing tests.
